Ο comm.De Santo είπε στον φρουρό να ειδοποιήσει τον Πρωθυπουργό ότι ο Πρέσβυς της Ιταλίας επιθυμούσε να γίνει δεκτός για μία άκρως επείγουσα ανακοίνωση. Ο φρουρός άρχισε να κτυπά ένα ηλεκτρικό κουδούνι που επικοινωνούσε με το εσωτερικό του σπιτιού, αλλά το υπηρετικό προσωπικό κοιμόταν. Περιμέναμε για μερικά ατελείωτα λεπτά μπροστά στην καγκελλόπορτα. Μες την βαθειά σιωπή της νύκτας ακουγόταν το γαύγισμα ενός σκύλου. Επί τέλους το κουδούνισμα ξύπνησε τον ίδιο τον Μεταξά, ο οποίος έκαμε την εμφάνισή του σε μία μικρή πόρτα υπηρεσίας και, αναγνωρίζοντας με, διέταξε τον φρουρό να με αφήσει να περάσω. Οι δύο συνοδοί μου έμειναν στον δρόμο περιμένοντας με, έξω από την καγκελλόπορτα. Ο Μεταξάς είχε φορέσει μία σκούρα μάλλινη ρόμπα, από τον γιακά της οποίας φαινόταν ένα μετριότατο βαμβακερό νυχτικό. Μου έσφιξε το χέρι, με έβαλε μέσα και με άφησε να περάσω σε ένα μικρό σαλόνι, το συνηθισμένο σαλονάκι μιας μικροαστικής εξοχικής βιλλίτσας. Αυτό το περιβάλλον αλά Guido Gozzano, με τα κακόγουστα καλά του πράγματα μ' έκανε να αναλογιστώ προς στιγμήν με κάποιο πικρό κρυφό χαμόγελο την Βίλλα Τορλόνια. Μόλις καθίσαμε του είπα ότι η Κυβέρνηση μου είχε αναθέσει να του κάμω μια άκρως επείγουσα ανακοίνωση και χωρίς άλλα λόγια του έδωσα το κείμενο. Ο Μεταξάς άρχισε να διαβάζει. Τα χέρια του κρατούσαν το χαρτί έτρεμαν ελαφρά και μέσα από τα γυαλιά του έβλεπα τα μάτια να βουρκώνουν, όπως συνήθιζε όταν ήταν συγκινημένος. Όταν τελείωσε την ανάγνωση, με κοίταξε κατά πρόσωπο και μου είπε με φωνή λυπημένη αλλά σταθερή: "Allors c' est la guerre" (Επομένως έχουμε πόλεμο). Του απήντησα ότι δεν ήταν καθόλου έτσι κατ' ανάγκην, και ότι μάλιστα η Ιταλική Κυβέρνηση ήλπιζε ότι η Ελληνική Κυβέρνηση θα εδέχετο τα αιτήματά της και θα άφηνε να περάσουν ελεύθερα τα ιταλικά στρατεύματα, τα οποία θα άρχιζαν τις μετακινήσεις τους την 6η πρωινή. Παρακολούθησα την συγκίνηση εις τα χέρια και εις τα μάτια του. Με σταθερή φωνή και βλέποντάς με κατάματα ο Μεταξάς μου είπε: "Αυτό σημαίνει πόλεμο". Του απήντησα ότι αυτό θα μπορούσε να αποφευχθεί. Μου απήντησε ΟΧΙ. Του πρόσθεσα ότι αν ο στρατηγός Παπάγος..., ο Μεταξάς με διέκοψε και μου είπε: ΟΧΙ! Έφυγα υποκλινόμενος με τον βαθύτερο σεβασμό, προ του γέροντος αυτού, που προτίμησε την θυσία αντί της υποδουλώσεως In this house, Metaxas said NO to the Italian ambassador Grazzi Alors c est la guerre were exactly the words of Metaxas.
