Το κύριο χαρακτηριστικό του είναι ότι δεν επιτρέπονται αυτοκίνητα και μοτοσικλέτες. Η περιήγηση των επισκεπτών γίνεται με τα πόδια, ποδήλατο ή με τα γαϊδουράκια (και άλογα) που ζουν στο νησί, τα οποία χρησιμοποιούνται για τις μεταφορές αγαθών και ανθρώπων. Μεγάλη η συνδρομή της νήσου στην νεότερη ιστορία της Ελλάδος. Από την Ύδρα κατάγεται ο πολιτικός και παράγοντας της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης Λάζαρος Κουντουριώτης, το σπίτι του οποίου διατηρείται ως μουσείο. Το νησί είναι μόλις 50 τετραγωνικά χιλιόμετρα, ακόμη και ένα σαββατοκύριακο είναι αρκετό ώστε να δείτε το λιμάνι και τα δύο παραλιακά μονοπάτια, τα οποία διατηρούνται σε άψογη κατάσταση.
