Είναι κτίριο από περιμετρικές φέρουσες λιθοδομές και ξύλινη στέγη. Από την στιγμή του θανάτου της κόρης της Αλεξάνδρας, μεγάλης δούκισσας Παύλου της Ρωσίας (1891), η Βασίλισσα Όλγα συνέλαβε την ιδέα της ανέγερσης ενός ναού στο κοιμητήρι της Δυναστείας. Η εκτέλεση του σχεδίου ωστόσο καθυστέρησε και ο θεμέλιος λίθος του ναού δεν τέθηκε παρά στις 6 Αυγούστου του 1899. Τον ναό περάτωσε στο διάστημα 1950-1952 ο βασιλεύς Παύλος που με την βοήθεια του βυζαντινολόγου ακαδημαϊκού Γεωργίου Σωτηρίου επέλεξε τα βυζαντινά γλυπτά που χρησίμευαν ως πρότυπα στην κατασκευή του τέμπλου και της Αγίας Τράπεζας.
