S	Ssikiotis on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ενας από τους μεγαλύτερους και σημαντικότερους οικισμούς του Δήμου Αριστοτέλη είναι η Μεγάλη Παναγία, γνωστή για το Μεγάλο Προσκύνημα χάρη στο οποίο πολύς κόσμος έρχεται εδώ κάθε χρόνο. Η κωμόπολη με τους περίπου 3500 κατοίκους, είναι κτισμένη στις υπώρειες του υψώματος με την ονομασία «Χτίκελα». Απέχει 80 χλμ. από την Θεσσαλονίκη. Το χωριό λεγόταν Ρεβενίκια και το σημερινό του όνομα το πήρε επίσημα το 1928. Είναι από τα παλαιότερα της Χαλκιδικής και αναφέρεται συχνά σε βυζαντινά έγγραφα του Αγίου Ορους -μάλιστα σε έγγραφο του 1349 υπάρχει αναφορά στο «καστέλιον Αραβενικαίας» και σε έναν πύργο. Κατά την τουρκοκρατία ήταν ένα από τα σπουδαιότερα Μαντεμοχώρια. Το 1821 το κατέστρεψαν οι Τούρκοι. Το 1932 πολλά από τα παλιά και όμορφα σπίτια της γκρεμίστηκαν από τον καταστροφικό σεισμό με επίκεντρο την Ιερισσό, ενώ μερικά κάηκαν στη διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκοσμίου πολέμου. Τον οικισμό παλαιότερα διέρρεαν τρία ποταμάκια, αλλά μονάχα ένα είναι ορατό στις μέρες μας. Ενα αναστηλωμένο, πέτρινο, τοξωτό γεφύρι με χιλιόχρονη ιστορία, στέκεται ακόμα δίπλα στον ασφαλτοστρωμένο δρόμο ενώνοντας τις δυο όχθες. Οι κάτοικοι ασχολούνται με τις ελιές, την κτηνοτροφία, τον αγροτουρισμό, την υλοτομία. Παλιά είχε καλούς κτιστάδες που δούλευαν και στο Αγιο Ορος, καθώς και πολλές υφάντρες. Είναι σημαντικό να αναφέρουμε ότι το όνομά του ο οικισμός το πήρε χάρη στο Μεγάλο Προσκύνημα του 1863, που απέχει 1,5 χλμ., αλλά το μοναστηριακό συγκρότημα δεν είναι το μοναδικό στην περιοχή. Σε απόσταση περίπου 4 χλμ. σε βατό χωματόδρομο υπάρχει ακόμα ένα μοναστήρι -γυναικείο- που ονομάζεται Παναγία-Φοβερά Προστασία. Ο πιο παλιός ναός, πάντως, στη Μεγάλη Παναγιά είναι η λεγόμενη Παναγούδα, η οποία, σύμφωνα με την τοπική παράδοση, κτίστηκε στα 1007 στο ψηλότερο σημείο του οικισμού. Το ξωκκλήσι που είναι αφιερωμένο στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου γιορτάζει 8 Σεπτεμβρίου. Ακόμη ένας σημαντικός ναός είναι αυτός του Αγίου Βασιλείου, κτισμένος το 1955. One of the largest and most important settlements of the Municipality of Aristotle is the Great Virgin, known for the Great Pilgrimage thanks to which many people come here every year. The town, with about 3500 inhabitants, is built on the slopes of a hill called "Chikela". It is 80 km from Thessaloniki. The village was called Revenikia, and its present name was officially named in 1928. It is one of the oldest in Halkidiki and is often mentioned in Byzantine documents of Mount Athos - although in a 1349 document there is a reference to the "Castelion of Arabenica" and a tower. During the Turkish occupation it was one of the most important Mantemohoria. In 1821 the Turks destroyed it. In 1932 many of its old and beautiful homes were destroyed by the devastating earthquake centered on Ierissos, and some were burnt down during World War II. In the past three rivers flowed through the settlement, but only one is visible nowadays. A restored, stone, arched bridge with a thousand-year history still stands by the paved road joining the two banks. Residents are involved in olive trees, livestock farming, agrotourism, logging. The old had good builders who worked on Mount Athos as well as many weavers. It is important to mention that the settlement was named after the Great Pilgrimage of 1863, 1.5 km away, but the monastery complex is not the only one in the area. At a distance of about 4 km on a dirt road there is another monastery - female - called Panagia-Awesome Protection. The oldest church, however, in the Great Panagia is the so-called Panagouda, which, according to local tradition, was built in 1007 at the highest point of the settlement. The chapel dedicated to the Assumption celebrates September 8. Another important church is that of St. Basil, built in 1955.
