Π	Πέτρος Αθανασάκος on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ΚΑΣΤΡΟ ΜΠΑΡΔΟΥΝΙΑΣ Τοποθεσία & Στρατηγική Σημασία Το κάστρο είναι χτισμένο βόρεια από το Γύθειο, στην ενδοχώρα, σε περιοχή που πήρε το όνομά της από το κάστρο και λέγεται Μπαρδούνια ή Βαρδούνια (και τα χωριά της, «Μπαρδουνοχώρια»). Η στρατηγική σημασία της τοποθεσίας έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι συνορεύει με τη Μάνη. Οι Οθωμανοί χρειάζονταν το κάστρο στην προσπάθειά τους να περιορίσουν τους ανυπότακτους Μανιάτες. Για τον ίδιο λόγο έφεραν εδώ τουρκικό πληθυσμό και Αλβανούς. Το φυσικό σύνορο με τη Μάνη είναι το γνωστό από την αρχαιότητα ποτάμι (το) Σμύνος, στην όχθη του οποίου είναι χτισμένο το κάστρο. Το ποτάμι λέγεται και ποτάμι της Αγίας Μαρίνας ή ποτάμι της Άρνας ή Μπαρδουνοπόταμος. BARDOUNI CASTLE Location & Strategic Importance The castle is built north of Gythio, inland, in an area named after the castle called Bardounias or Vardounia (and its villages, "Baroudoukoria"). The strategic importance of the site lies in the fact that it borders with Mani. The Ottomans needed the castle in their attempt to limit the unrelenting Maniates. For the same reason they brought here Turkish population and Albanians. The natural border with Mani is the ancient river known as Smynos, which is built on the bank of the castle. The river is also called the river of Agia Marina or the river of Arna or Bardupopotamos.
