Holy Monastery of Kernitsi: The oldest monastery in Arcadia, dedicated to the Virgin Mary Just before Vytina, turning to the village of Nymfasia, a little further down, stands the majestic Holy Monastery of Kernitsa. One could say that this Monastery has sprouted in the green, since, wherever you turn your gaze, you encounter dense vegetation! The monastery took its name from the Medieval city, Kernitsa, which was located southwest of the Monastery in the mountain range of Argyrokastro, northwest of Vytina. The Monastery "lives" for about 10 centuries and is considered the oldest in Arcadia and one of the oldest in Greece. According to the written tradition, the owners of the Monastery were the Petzokolai who came from Kernitsa. From 1680 onwards, a Hidden School operated in the Monastery, it had a junior school, a middle and a high school. The "wise fathers" of Kernitsa taught the children not only writing and reading, but also the desire for freedom. In 1710, the Secret School was moved to Vytina. Initially, it was a Male Monastery. Over the years, however, the Monastery was deserted and, by royal decree on 3 / 2.1940, was transformed into a nunnery. In the precinct of the Monastery is built the Church of "Panagia Kernitsa". It is located at the top of the rock of Kernitsa and celebrates on the 15th of August. Below this Temple there is a cave - which functioned as a hermitage - and there was found the Icon of the Virgin Mary! Later, a small church was built here which became a chapel of the Monastery. Inside the Monastery there are Relics Cases with bones and relics of Saints and Martyrs. There are temples outside the Monastery: About 100 meters west of the Monastery is the Church of the Holy Forerunner which was inaugurated in 1968 by the Rev. Metropolitan of Gortys and Megalopolis Theofilos. To the south of the Monastery is the Church of the Brigadiers which functions as a confessional. Finally, in the place of the Metropolitan Church of Kernitsa and in its ruins, the Church of Agios Nikolaos was built. The Holy Monastery of Kernitsa also has, under its supervision, Metochia: First, the Monastery of Agios Theodoros located in Pyrgaki, in the center of the Peloponnese. This Monastery was founded by the Palaeologans in the 14th century and became a permanent part of Kernitsa in 1925. Second, the old monastery, an old hermitage called "Sfirida". It is about an hour and a half from the Monastery of Kernitsa and celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on August 23. The Icon of the Virgin Mary is considered miraculous because, at times, it has cured many schizophrenics and paralyzed people! Also, between the northern and western cells of the Monastery, there is an opening where the well-known "log" is kept, to which the madmen were tied and waited for the doctor! The Monastery only accepts pilgrims, however it maintains two Guesthouses and can accommodate 50-60 people. It is characteristic that the Divine Liturgy is always performed at night! Access to the Holy Monastery of Kernitsa is easy, on foot or by car. \ It is located about 45 km from Tripoli. From Patras, to reach Kernitsa, one comes via 111 which reaches outside Lagkadia and Vytina and, from the villages of Magouliana, Lasta and Valtesiniko, via "Sfirida", on foot. The largest and oldest monastery in Arcadia with its beautiful gardens, very neat and clean, is located a short distance from Vytina. From 1680 a secret school, middle and upper school operated in the monastery. It was originally a convent for men, but in 1940 it was converted into a convent by royal decree.
