Ονομάζεται και Θερμιά, παλαιότερα αναφερόταν ως «Επισκοπή Κέας και Θερμίων». Το όνομα αυτό οφείλεται στις θερμές πηγές που υπάρχουν μέχρι και σήμερα στον όρμο των Λουτρών. Τα λουτρά της Κύθνου λέγεται ότι απολάμβανε και ο βασιλιάς Όθωνας και η βασίλισσα Αμαλία. Παλαιότερα στην Κύθνο ευδοκιμούσε πολύ το κριθάρι, κύριος αγοραστής του τότε ήταν η ζυθοποιία Φιξ. Το κλίμα θεωρείται πολύ υγιεινό και η διαμονή μάλλον ευχάριστη παρά τους ισχυρούς βόρειους ανέμους. Πρωτεύουσα του νησιού είναι η Χώρα, υπάρχουν κυρίως δε, τρεις παραθαλάσιοι οικισμοί, το κύριο λιμάνι Μέριχας, των Λουτρών, με τις ιαματικές πηγές του και η Παναγία Κανάλα με την ομώνυμη εκκλησία. Ο ναός της Παναγίας της Κανάλας χτίστηκε το 1869 στη θέση του αρχικού ναού μετά από την εύρεση της εικόνας από ντόπιους ψαράδες. Η παράδοση λέει ότι η εικόνα ανασύρθηκε από τα δίχτυα ψαράδων στο στενό (κανάλι) ανάμεσα στην Κύθνο και την Σέριφο, εξού και η απονομασία Κανάλα. Η θαυματουργή εικόνα της Παναγίας στην Κανάλα είναι ένα εξαιρετικό έργο της Κρητικής σχολής και την αγιογράφησε ο ιερέας Εμμανουήλ Σκορδίλης το 1575. Η περιοχή αυτή της Κανάλας είναι από τους πιο δημοφιλείς προορισμούς του καλοκαιριού καθώς παραθερίζουν εκεί πλήθος τουριστών. Φημίζεται ακόμη, ως το πιο πράσινο σημείο του νησιού. Υπέροχοι άνθρωποι, καλές παραλίες, γραφικά ταβερνάκια με λογικές τιμές, όλα πολύ καλά! Η μόνη αρνητική μου εμπειρία ήταν αυτό που θα δείτε σε μία εκ των φωτογραφιών μου, συνήθεια δυστυχώς γενικευμένη στο νησί από τους κτηνοτρόφους! A beautiful Cycladic island, of which you would have no objection to go and come back. Wonderful people, good beaches, picturesque taverns with reasonable prices, all very well!
