★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This wonderful monastery from the 7th century is open to visit from dawn to dusk except of Wednesdays. It is located in an extraordinary landscape. There are three monks living here and you can also buy local honey and herbs. It is far away from usual routes but definitely worth a visit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Next to the Greek-Albanian border, near the river Aoos and Sarantaporos, is the famous Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin, one of the oldest and most beautiful of Epirus. It is better known as the Monastery of Molyvdoskepastos, because of the lead sheets covering the roof of its catholic.
According to an inscription that is preserved in the katholikon, the monastery was founded in the 7th century by the Byzantine emperor Konstantinos D Pogonato. It was renovated in the beginning of the 14th century by Andronikos Komninos, Grand Duke Palaiologos, grandson of the despot of Epirus Michael II Komnenos Doukas, and later, in 1521, by the inhabitants of Pogoniani. It was originally a crossbreed - that is, it belonged directly to the Patriarchate - and experienced great prosperity, culminating in the 16th century, a time of its renovation.
She had a great fortune and had a stake in Romania, while a school, a workshop for manuscripts and a rich library functioned in its premises. Gradually, from the 17th century it began to decline and in 1848 it was definitively abandoned. In 1943 it was bombarded by German troops and partially destroyed its cell group.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Holy Monastery of Panagia Molyvdoskepastou is beautiful and inspiring Byzantine monastery, located in a picturesque valley, very close to Aoos River (Vjose), and in a distance of 400 meters of the point where it meets Sarantaporo River (The border between Greece and Albania).
A great site for everyone who travels in this beautiful area of Konitsa...
