The Holy Monastery of Giromeri was founded at the beginning of the 14th century (between 1310 and 1320) during the heyday of the Despotate of Epirus. It was an important monastic center and reached its peak in the middle of the 16th century, a time when, according to Theodosios Zygomalas, it numbered about 300 monks. From the beginning of its foundation it belonged to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, as a Patriarchal and Stavropegian and later (18th century) as the seat of a Patriarchal Exarchate. Its jurisdiction included 12 villages of the province and the city of Filiates. In the year 1800, the Monastery became the seat of the Diocese of Giromeri, under the Diocese of Ioannina, with the same area under its jurisdiction. From then until 1895, when it was finally abolished, it had various rotations, sometimes as the seat of a Diocese and sometimes as an Exarchate. In 1928, the Ecumenical Patriarchate "granted" the administrative supervision of the Monastery to the Holy Diocese of Paramythia, Filiates and Giromeri, but maintaining its normal copyright on it. For this reason, in the Holy Communions that take place in the Monastery, the name of the respective Ecumenical Patriarch is mentioned. The offer of the Monastery in the area of ​​Thesprotia throughout its long history was also great, contributing to the preservation of the National and Religious consciousness of the inhabitants. Characteristic was the operation of the Hidden School and the Theological School, inside the Monastery. Also, with the actions of some Exarchs and at the expense of the Monastery, schools were operating in some of the villages of the area.
