★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I am on a week long monastery pilgrimage in Attica visiting from California. Day after Christmas, I spent an hour in the Katholikon alone when the attendant unknowingly locked the door and left without walking inside the chapel to check. I was sitting near and left of the iconostasis, 50 yards from the entrance and I don't talk loud in Orthodox churches let alone screaming to grab the attendant' attention. An hour later, a kind pilgrim lady saw me inside from outside and went about the monastery and found two monks to open up the entrance. Once they opened the door, they saw me walking to them and were kind and prayerful with a few words in English. I didn't mind to sit there for another 3 hours to pray and meditate waiting for the vespers to start and the entrance be unlocked. But I am on my way to Hosios Loukas monastery a two-hour drive. Here in moni penteli you find a wonderful mix of old and restored/knewly painted wall frescos playing with light beams through the small mirrors.
