THE FAMOUS and Legendary Monastery of Panagia Tatarni is located in a land language, which penetrates into the large artificial lake of Kremasta. A few years ago, just below the Monastery, its blue waters flowed Acheloos, the thousand-sung Aspropotamos of folk songs. Now Aspros and tributaries were covered by the calm waters of the lake. The landscape became more beautiful, the climate sweeter, milder. Without exaggeration, the landscape is of rare beauty. This is confirmed by people who turned all the latitudes and longitudes of the earth. The Monastery is built on a slope of Aidonorrachis (so named from its many nightingales that sing and "suppress" the hearings in the spring) with exquisite views of the lake and the mountains of Valtos. It is a green area, without the wildness of the mountain or the dryness of the plain. The altitude is 380 meters above sea level and about a hundred meters - depending on the season - above the lake. Here the heart is calmed, the mind is elevated to the theory of spirituality and the eye rejoices in the greatness of the Creator. "Because of the size and beauty of buildings, according to them, their creator is considered God." It is a blessed place, a small orchard of the Virgin Mary. It is a place loaded with historical memories, with spiritual struggles. The Monastery is about seventy kilometers from Karpenisi and about one hundred from Agrinio. The two roads merge in West Frangista, this beautiful and lively village of Evritania. They are paved. There is no dirt road anymore. From 1992 the asphalt reaches the door of the Monastery. The beauty of the landscape, which elsewhere is wild and imposing, full of firs and ravines, endless maneuvers and endless turns and elsewhere is tame, accessible, pleasing to the eye, richly compensates the pilgrim. Fountains with crystal clear waters, rivers with deep plane trees, heaths and flowering arbutus, mountains reflected in the restless and wrinkled lake, ash-colored olive groves mixed with giant arias, are not something common for the man of cities. And the main thing: A place free from tourism and industry, from sewage and exhaust fumes. A pure place, as it came out of the hands of the Creator and as it was cultivated by the rosy hands of the peasant. The old bridge of Manolis, a work of the 16th century, still stands proudly above the strait of Agrafiotis, in defiance of time and the water of the lake that every spring, climbing and inflating, drowns it up to its neck. He mocks modern technique. Twenty-five years ago, they built a new bridge next to it, with concrete and iron. There were inaugurations, festive speeches were made, a big party took place. At the first descent of Agrafiotis, the bridge was swept away and disappeared. They are still looking to find traces of her. But the bridge of Manolis with the big arch, built with stones and kourasani remains ... under the control of the public services. In front of us the famous Agrafa, the mountains that were left untouched by a Turkish foot, are erased on the horizon proudly, narrated by ancient "klei", past greatness and current desolation. In the background, Tzoumerka fades, rough, steep, almost always snowy, varied from the sun's games on their mountain peaks and deep water eateries. Opposite the Swamp. The Karleli of the Turks (Karl-eli: country of Charles Tokos). Mountains more sunny but with less vegetation. The "absorbing" Channel dominates. The mountain with the vertical slopes, which fall sharply into the lake. It is a sanctified mountain. Saint Andreas, a famous ascetic who lived in the thirteenth century, practiced asceticism there. Evritania was connected in the old days with Valtos, thanks to a bridge that left an era: the bridge of Tatarna. It was a miracle of technique, of the era of Ottoman rule. One wonders how they built it ... A single arch supported by two vertical rocks and Acheloos boiling below ... Now this bridge is deep sunk in the waters of the lake. A new bridge in the same place, but higher, was erected shortly before the waters of the lake arrived.

The monastery of Tatarna (or Tetarna) is one of the most historic monasteries in Central Greece. It is located in the prefecture of Evritania west of the village of Tripotamos and near the old historic single-chamber bridge of the same name (Tatarna Bridge) on the river Acheloos. The old historic monastery no longer exists, as does the old bridge. It collapsed (in 1963) after the earthquakes, which followed the construction of the Kremasta dam and the creation of the Kremasta lake.

Very beautiful alone. With a nice view. Great dormitories .. The elders polite and willing to show the history of the monastery .. Do not be afraid of the dog. He is friendly although at first he barks :-)

Isolated and quiet and slightly neglected. It has no opening hours. It is open from sunrise to sunset. You see Kremasta Lake but the view is not panoramic. Just before you reach a left turn, it has a plateau with a gazebo. There you can better admire the Lake and take photos. It is a beautiful place and a beautiful monastery !!!
