★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Κατά τις ανασκαφές που έγιναν το 1956 από τον Δ. Θεοχάρη εντοπίστηκαν τμήματα κτηρίων του 15ου αιώνα π.Χ. τα οποία καταστράφηκαν από πυρκαγιά.
Τα αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα ταυτίζουν την περιοχή με την Ιωλκό. Κατά την παλαιοχριστιανική και βυζαντινή εποχή, ο οχυρωμένος οικισμός ήταν γνωστός με το όνομα “Κάστρο Παλαιών”. Το κάστρο επισκευάστηκε από τον Ιουστινιανό το 551μ. Χ. Υπάρχει σχετική αναφορά στο έργου του Προκόπιου “Περί κτισμάτων”. Η οχύρωση έχει τετράπλευρο σχήμα και ανά τακτά διαστήματα τετράπλευρους πύργους. Στις δύο νότιες γωνίες υπάρχουν κυκλικοί πύργοι.
 During the excavations that were made in 1956 by D. Theocharis, segments of buildings of the 15th century BC were found. which were destroyed by fire.
Archaeological finds identify the area with Iolkos. During the Early Christian and Byzantine era, the fortified settlement was known as the "Old Castle". The castle was repaired by Justinian in 551m. X. There is a reference to the Procopius project "Buildings". The fortification has quadrangular shape and at regular intervals quadruple towers. In the two southern corners there are circular towers.
