You have to visit this place and think about the story of its destruction

Palaiochóra (the old town) up in the north of Kythira is the setting of a deserted Byzantine settlement magnificent and unexpected. Fortresses and abandoned churches are built precariously over vertiginous drops; just the aroma of wild oregano and, if the wind is still, the only sound you can hear is bird-songs or the buzz of bees...

Former capital of Kythera and mowadays an abandoned medieval town, full of destroyed churches and houses.

Great view and also great photographic experience with a unique scenery and ruins of buildings that can give you great shots especially at sunset.

The views from the castle are amazing. You will walk around, and notice that the castle is surrounded by a natural landscape, being the gorge (that leads to the beach where Barbarossa landed), one of the most remarkable features. The quantity of churches are enormous and you can enter in some of them. Also there are a couple of trails finishing/starting from here.

Atmospheric abandoned old Town of Kythera, I followed a very nice path from village Trifyllianika to Paleochora (2km, about 1 hour walking). There are great remains of the castle and Byzantine churches. Be careful when walking through the remains because the town was built on the edge of the cliff.

A historical place with a lot of "energy". The gorges that surround the fortified location are impressive and breathtaking. The visitor can still see part of the fortificacions, old churches and remains of other buildings. Pure byzantine medieval architecture. Parts of church iconography can still be seen, but it is a pity that they are not protected against weather.
