Πρόκειται για τα απομεινάρια μιας προγενέστερης Εκκλησία που βρισκόταν εκεί. Υπάρχει η εικόνα του Προφήτη Ηλία χαραγμένη σε πέτρα. Από τον λόφο αυτό φαίνεται η χώρα του νησιού αμφιθεατρικά, το κάτω Κουφονήσι, η Κέρος, η Αμοργός, το Γλαρονήσι και η Νάξος! Το ηλιοβασίλεμα από την πλευρά της Νάξου, καθώς και τα χρώματα εκείνης της ώρας είναι καταπληκτικά. Ενδείκνυται για ορειβασία!

Ίσως είναι το μοναδικό αξιοθέατο του νησιού. Βρίσκεται περίπου είκοσι λεπτά με τα πόδια έξω από την χώρα. Οι κάτοικοι του νησιού μας είπαν πως είναι έτσι στην μορφή αυτή που είδαμε πάρα πολλά χρόνια και κάθε φορά που προσπαθούσαν να το αναστηλώσουν κάτι συνέβαινε και οι εργασίες σταματούσαν. Λες και ο προφήτης Ηλίας ήθελε να μείνει έτσι το εκκλησάκι για να αγναντεύει τη θάλασσα. Η θέα από το σημείο αυτό είναι μοναδική και θα σας ανταμείψει!!!!

A small road leads up to this church above the village of Nikia on the crater's rim,.but also a steep footpath over concrete steps from the village itself goes up there. The whitewashed church dates from the year 2010 as it says on an inscription with the benefactors. It is in the typical Byzantine style of a cross-in-square church with a dome (here painted blue) and a porch in front. The material used is concrete and not stone as in older churches, which makes for an overly smooth surface. Inside there are frescoes and icons, often depicting Prophet Elias sitting in a cave on a mountain top, while a raven brings him a loaf of bread. The church alone is not really a reason to come up here, it is the views that are spectacular: all over the volcano with the Stephanos crater and over the attractive nearby village of Nikia. Across the volcano one has a good view of the island's highest peak (698m) with a small chapel, also dedicated to the Prophet Elias. The hike up there, starting at the Evangelistrias monastery, had been one of my best activities during a week on the island. Coming back to the new Prophet Elias church there is an ecclesiastical building nearby, a bit down from the crater's rim, also worthwhile to visit: the cave church of the Moni Theologou, dedicated to St.John the Evangelist and dating from the early 19th century.
