Σε απόσταση περίπου ενός χιλιομέτρου πριν από τον τερματισμό της αρχαία Ιερά Οδός στην Ελευσίνα, συναντούσε την κοίτη του Ελευσινιακού Κηφισού. Στο σημείο αυτό κατασκευάστηκε κατά τη Ρωμαϊκή περίοδο (2ος αιώνας μ.Χ.) μία λίθινη γέφυρα. Η γέφυρα βρίσκεται κοντά στην ανατολική είσοδο της σύγχρονης πόλης (στη βάση της γέφυρας της Ν.Ε.Ο.Α.Κ.), είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα σωζόμενα μνημεία αυτού του είδους.. Η αρχαία ρωμαϊκή γέφυρα της Ελευσίνας αποτελείται από τέσσερις βαριές και χαμηλές λίθινες καμάρες, στηριζόμενες σε τρεις πεσσούς, θεμελιωμένους μέσα στην παλαιά κοίτη. Το μήκος της κατασκευής είναι περίπου 30 μέτρα και το πλάτος 5,30. Χτίστηκε επι αυτοκρατορίας Αδριανού, ο οποίος ρητά αναφέρεται ως “χειμάσας εις Αθήνας και μυηθείς στα Ελευσίνια και γεφυρώσας Ελευσίνα κατακλυσθείσαν υπό Κηφισού ποταμού” (Ευσεβ. Χρον. Έκδ. Α. Schone, τομ. 2, σελ. 166). Ο Παυσανίας επισκέφθηκε την Ελευσίνα 25 χρόνια μετά την πολύμηνη παραμονή του Αδριανού στην Αθήνα και ίσως έμαθε επί τόπου πως αφορμή στη κατασκευή της γέφυρας έδωσε μια πλημμύρα του Κηφισού το φθινόπωρο του 125, οπότε ο Αδριανός είχε πάει στην Ελευσίνα για τη μύησή του. Η πληροφορία αυτή έκανε τον Παυσανία να χαρακτηρίζει το ελευσινιακό ποτάμι ως “βιαιότερον” του ομώνυμου αθηναϊκού. Η γέφυρα ανασκάφηκε και αποκαλύφτηκε από τον αρχαιολόγο Ιωάννη Τραυλό το έτος 1950. Η κατασκευή της από σκληρό Πειραϊκό πωρόλιθο και η άριστοτεχνική της δομή και τεχνική από τα Ρωμαϊκά χρόνια, την έκανα να αντισταθεί στο διάβα του χρόνου. Ο αρχαιολόγος Ιωάννης Τραυλός που από το 1950 είχε αποκαλύψει την ύπαρξη της γέφυρας, παρατήρησε λαξευμένους λατινικούς αριθμούς πάνω σε πολλά μάρμαρα, παρόμοια με τα λαξεύματα στην βιβλιοθήκη του Αδριανού στη Αθήνα.
