Olimpia (Ολυμπία) in antiquity was the most famous place of Zeus worship. At the foot of the hill, Panhellian Olympics dedicated to Zeus, called from this Olympic Games, takes place every 4 years. The first recorded Olympic Games, took place in 776 BC. From the seventh century BC huge buildings were built here. The most important of them was completed in about 456 BC Temple of Zeus. Inside, there was a cult statue of Zeus (13 m high), counted among the seven wonders of the world. He represented a god sitting on a throne in a coat and with an olive wreath on his head, holding a golden scepter in his left hand, in the right Nike's statue. The statue burned down during the fire of the temple and its appearance is known from literary descriptions. The co-creator of this huge sculpture was Fidias. The ruins of his workshop are located next to the ruins of the temple of Zeus.

This is the site of where the Temple of Zeus once stood, an original ancient wonder of the world and real joy to experience. One can almost feel the history come to life when visiting. You may notice a large brighter pillar still standing; this is only a replica to show you the scale of the pillar when they were still standing.

One of the Seven Classical Wonders of the Ancient World !!! Before the participants competed in the Ancient Olympic games, they would come here and pray to a 40 foot gold plated effigy of Zeus. The carving was said to be so powerfully lifelike, majestic and awesomely regal, that all who gazed upon it in wonder felt that it actually was the very King of the Gods incarnate ;)

Temple of Zeus at Olympia was an ancient Greek temple in Olympia, Greece, dedicated to the god Zeus. The temple, built in the second quarter of the fifth century BC, was the very model of the fully developed classical Greek temple of the Doric order.

A remnant of an ancient wonder. Wish the Zeus statue was still around but things are lost in history. This has been well restored and is still ongoing.

You can give it a quick glance from the outside and spend time elsewhere! Not sure you really want to go inside as there isn’t much to see
