★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This obelisk is dedicated to Howard Douglas, who was the Lord High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands from 1835 to 1841.
He founded the Ionian University, mental hospital and prison. building, he built roads and founded a number of charities.
The stone obelisk stands on a square pedestal with bronze plaques on each side.
The obelisk was damaged by the bombing during the second World War, but it was later restored. Truthfully it looks in need of some TLC at the moment.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A historic monument in memory and honour of British Baron Howard Douglas who not only served the island but also helped build a number of buildings back in the 1900s, including the Ionian University, as well as most of the cities infrastructure including the streets.
Not much to see really, nowadays it serves as a meeting place, it's in the middle of an intersection of the city's bigger streets. Noteworthy, the fact that most of the old city's buildings still preserved and standing today can be seen if one's taking the street directly towards the city centre, upward from this monument.
