En la actualidad la mayor parte de lo que ha sobrevivido de la muralla se puede observar precisamente en el yacimiento arqueológico del Cerámico. Fue levantada en el contexto de la II Guerra Médica (480-478 ane) y con caracter de urgencia temiendo un nuevo ataque persa en el 479 ane, poco después de la batalla de Salamina (480 ane). Para su construcción fueron aprovechados los restos de los templos y edificaciones inservibles (spolia), destruidos e incendiados poco tiempo antes por los persas de Jerjes I. Por la heterogeneidad de los materiales que la componen y por estar en pleno núcleo urbano de la actual Atenas, no deja de sorprender que después de 2.500 años aún queden restos reconocibles de la misma. Paradójicamente, a la vez que servía de defensa y fortificación de la polis, provocó como contrapartida un gran hacinamiento poblacional intramuros, que no muchos años después acabaría con la vida de muchos atenienses víctimas de la virulencia de una letal peste, entre ellos la del propio Pericles. With more than 8 kilometers of perimeter, it surrounded the entire area of the polis of Athens. Currently, most of what has survived of the wall can be seen precisely in the archaeological site of Ceramic. It was built in the context of the Second Medical War (480-478 BC) and as a matter of urgency fearing a new Persian attack in 479 BC, shortly after the battle of Salamis (480 BC). For its construction, the remains of the useless temples and buildings (spolia), destroyed and burned down shortly before by the Persians of Xerxes I, were used. Due to the heterogeneity of the materials that compose it and because it is in the heart of the urban center of present-day Athens, it is surprising that after 2,500 years there are still recognizable remains of it. Paradoxically, at the same time that it served as a defense and fortification of the polis, it caused, as a counterpart, a large intramural population overcrowding, which not many years later would end the lives of many Athenians, victims of the virulence of a lethal plague, among them that of the own Pericles.
