★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I booked a trip for my parents on Expedia, which included a rental from Thrifty - how I wish I'd read the previous reviews before I did so.
On the first leg of their trip involving connecting flights, my parents' first flight was cancelled due to fog. Along with having to change multiple flights, we attempted to contact the car hire agency to let them know they'd be delayed. Apparently they don't really care for phone calls, because nobody ever picked up the phone even though we tried calling them upwards of a dozen times. We contacted Expedia and explained the situation. The adviser kindly attempted to reach them, but also to no avail. Even their US-based customer service branch told us they couldn't do anything about it. Great! It took until the day after the pick-up date to get through to someone. The chap told us not to worry, that he understood the situation and that everything would be resolved once my parents arrived in Santorini.
Upon arrival at the Thrifty desk, my parents received an out-of-hours charge even though they'd been waiting in the queue since well before the cut-off time. Their reservation papers, whilst all in order, amounted to nothing as the car we'd booked had already been given away - that's right, the car, which had already been fully paid for, was given away despite our attempts to contact and reason with them, and along with the apparent promise that everything would be sorted. As a 'show of good will', however, they were allowed to UPGRADE from a 5-door car to a Smart Car at an additional cost!
Not being happy with the result, we filed a complaint. Fast forward two months and we've finally received some form of refund, but from Expedia, not Thrifty (Hertz) - see the following from an Expedia adviser's email that prompted me to write this review: "... I did contact the service provider to discuss your concerns and they apologized for the inconvenience caused. Also there was no refund authorised by the car hire company for the additional cost."
TL;DR Parents' holiday was more stressful than relaxing due to these people. Their incompetence knows no bounds - avoid them at all costs.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Embarrassing service here with an incompetent cretin of a woman managing. Was not even manned during its normal operating hours when we arrived. Had to call the listed emergency numbers in order until we reached the aforementioned woman. When she finally arrived, she told us she'd already given away our car a few hours ago and none were available, even though we'd prepaid them already for several days. Apparently they overbook by dozens of reservations daily and can't wait to screw you over. Moreover, there were several clearly available cars on the lot, which she pretended were not free. Even if they were actually reserved, her sudden concern for abiding reservations when she so obviously did not care was certainly amusing. There was not even the faintest attempt at customer service, problem resolution, or pointing the way at the nearest competitor. We were merely given a silent middle finger while they waited for us to vacate the premises.

Like many people, I rented a small car through a website that has good deals with Thrifty. As it happens frequently, our boat to Santorin has been a bit late and I arrived at the Thrifty counter 1h30 after my reservation was due to start. The lady at the counter told us that our reservation was cancelled, that our car has been rented to someone else, and that the only one available for the day was a car costing three times more than the initial car! I obviously complained, as this was very fishy, I could see cars all over their parking (even the same model as I booked). When talking with the lday at the counter, I could see her and her manager were not happy with the deal I got online (50% discount) and that they would rather rent the car to other people!
I left the shop, went on the same website, and could see that many cars were available at Thrifty (which means they were lying to my face…). Since I really needed a car, I booked another car at Thrifty (new reservation starting 2 hours later as the website does not allow you to book car less than 2 hour in advance). I came straight back into the shop, showed my new reservation. They looked so embarrassed for having lied to my face the whole time. I tried to remain as calm and nice as possible since I really needed a car. I asked very politely to the girl at the counter if she could give me the car now because I had plans (and was already very late…). I could see in her eyes that she was about to say yes, but wanted to confirm with her manager. I could see that the manager was very frustrated that I caught them lying and managed to booked another car at a good price. He looked at me and said that I couldn’t get the car now because the car has not been returned by another client yet. I left the shop, could see the car right outside the shop, took a picture of the plate, and waited in the streets nearby. I got back 2,5 hours later, and the manager gave me the keys to the same car that was right outside the shop the whole afternoon (same plate)… I cancelled everything I had planned for the afternoon, which was very inconvenient as I was staying only 3 days with my girlfriend on the island.
Bottom line: I have rented many cars, in many countries and never faced such a frustrating situation. Not only the customer service was poor, but the manager there clearly lied to my face several time and took his revenge by making the car unavailable to me until late in the afternoon. I have never left a bad review to anyone, but I had to post something as I can’t let it go. Please note that the manager works for both THRIFTY and HERTZ.
