A pleasantly simple area with the mound that serves as the tomb of the 192 Athenians who died in the battle at its centre. The simplicity of the site seems quite appropriate overall, with the orderly olive trees adding to the sense of solemnity somehow Given the significance of the battle that was fought in the area, however, it might be better to have a few more boards around the site to explain the momentous events. There are several near the entrance which are good but fairly dense and having a few dotted around the site would be welcome for those who would like to pause and read further. We found the map of the area showing key sites around the plain and how they fit together very helpful, though. Since it's included in the price of admission to the Museum - although a short distance away by car (5-10 mins) - we thought it was well worth a visit, even if you can't stay that long.

To be honest this was a deception. It's just a small hill, maratonas is not a special town at all. For me it was a nice idea to know the background behind the place but nothing more than that.

Really nice and beautiful park. It was €3 to enter. Please note that this ticket can be used for the archeological museum as well.

Must visit site if you are in Marathon. So much historical significance especially if you have ran a marathon. This was what it was all about. Pheidippides ran back to Athens to inform them of their victory in battle. The burial site of 192 Athenians who were killed during the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Sadly, the park grounds are not very well kept and not enough has been done to dedicate this place to the famous battle. Closed on Monday.

It is a quick visit. Easy to park and a short walk around the tomb. It is nothing fancy, just some plaques and a map that show the setup before the battle. They could really have done much more here if they wanted to, there is space and history. Don't expect to much, and if you do not know what it is about you might want to read up before you visit.

There may not be as much to see, but the importance of this site for the entire history of Europe is colossal.

Really juts a mound. There are signs and posts that depict the Persian Greek war.
