The first church of Agios Spyridon is the oldest church in the greater area of ​​Piraeus, and as mentioned was built in the 11th or 12th century, on the ruins of the ancient temple of Aphrodite, and was the focus of developments since antiquity. The current emblematic, 3rd in a row, church of Agios Spyridon of Piraeus, in the center of the city, the center of all its activities, was founded on the ruins of a eponymous monastery of both old churches in May 1863. The original design of the architect Stamatis Cleanthis, according to neoclassical standards, however, was modified by the German Edward Saubert. The completion and decoration of the temple was done 135 years ago 1876. Saint Spyridon is revered as a saint by the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. His memory is celebrated on December 12 in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
