Agia Marina Donkey Sanctuary - Epar.Od. Gortinas - Matalon

A wonderful and worthwhile visit. The owners take great care of the animals. They spent lots of time with guests to answer questions and show us around. We brushed, pet, and posed for photos with the donkeys, sheep, goat. Plan a stop here, it will uplift your spirit--a must for animal lovers.

The best sanctuary for donkeys...thanks to the people whose love for them are there to help them...

A place full of loving beings, both on two and four legs. The owners of the place are willing to share a story of how each of the animal got there, which made the experience even more interesting. We even saw a peacock that comes and goes to the Donkey Sanctuary as it wants.

A wonderful place for animals in need During our vacation in Matala, my girlfriend and I visited the nearby Donkey Rescue and we were immediately absolutely thrilled. It is really great to see how lovingly the family takes care of the numerous donkeys and all the other animals. At the Donkey Rescue, animals in need find a wonderful home - many animals that had a bad life behind them can still live a few happy years there - really great! We had extensive opportunities to meet the animals, and my girlfriend even got to groom a couple of donkeys, which was great fun for her. The family that runs the Donkey Rescue was very friendly and took a lot of time for us. In a small store there was the opportunity to buy home produced products like olive oil or raki, which we were happy to do. If you want to support the sanctuary even more, you can even sponsor a donkey ;-) We think it is so great that there are people like the operators of the Donkey Rescue - they really do a great job and sacrifice themselves for the poor animals. Definitely worth supporting! The Donkey Rescue is really worth a visit and we will definitely come back on our next vacation in Matala.

It is a beautiful place in which a family rescues and takes care of exhausted animals used for labour and living in horrible conditions across the island. They give them home and a safe and peaceful life. If you are in Crete, go and visit them and remind yourself why life is about caring for others just as much it is about caring for yourself.

Barbara and fani are so lovely and warm hearted people. What they are doing is so beautiful. Giving the animals, donkeys, goats, dogs and many more a shelter and peace after their hard and sometimes abusive lives before. This has to be supported, it is so much worth it.

Wonderful place with great people and very friendly animals. A little visit is highly recommended!
