Η Άργιλος αποτελούσε μια πολιτεία που ιδρύθηκε το 655 π.X. για να ελέγχει τις πλούσιες σε πρώτες ύλες εκβολές του ποταμού Στρυμώνα και αποτελούσε αποικία των Ανδρίων. Ο έλεγχος της εισόδου της κοιλάδας του Στρυμόνα ήταν σημαντικός διότι η περιοχή ήταν πλούσια σε αγροτικά προϊόντα, ξυλεία και μεταλλεύματα. Για την περιοχή αυτή έδειξαν αργότερα ενδιαφέρον οι Θάσιοι, με την ίδρυση της Ηιόνας στα παράλια του Στρυμονικού κόλπου. [1][2]. Το όνομά της το οφείλει στο είδος του πηλού που αφθονεί στην περιοχή. Οι αποικίες της Άνδρου στο Βόρειο Αιγαίο ήταν τέσσερις: η Άργιλος, η Σάνη της Ακτής, τα Στάγειρα και η Άκανθος. Για περίπου εβδομήντα χρόνια, οι Ανδριώτες έζησαν μαζί με τον ντόπιο θρακικό πληθυσμό - συμβίωση που επιβεβαιώνουν τα πασσαλόπηκτα σπίτια και τα κατάλοιπα της λεγόμενης θρακομακεδονικής κεραμικής, που ανακάλυψε η αρχαιολογική σκαπάνη.[3] Η πόλη ακμάζει κατά τον 6ο και 5ο π.Χ. αιώνα και αυτό επιβεβαιώνουν τόσο τα αρχιτεκτονικά ευρήματα όσο και η συμμετοχή της πόλης στο ταμείο της Αθηναϊκής Συμμαχίας. Η ακμή της συνεχίζεται έως την ίδρυση της Αμφίπολης το 437 π.Χ. Η πόλη αρχίζει να χάνει σε σπουδαιότητα και δύναμη, όταν καταστρέφεται από το πέρασμα της στρατιάς του Φιλίππου το 357 π.Χ. Ο έλεγχος της περιοχής, μετά την καταστροφή της Αργίλου, περνάει σε έναν από τους Μακεδόνες εταίρους του Φιλίππου του Β’ και η πόλη δεν κατοικήθηκε πλέον παρά μόνο στην ακρόπολή της.[4] Ευρήματα από την αρχαία Άργιλο εκτίθενται στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Αμφίπολης και στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Σερρών. The colonies of Andros in the North Aegean were four: Argilos, Sani of the Coast, Stageira and Akanthos. For about seventy years, the Andriots lived together with the local Thracian population - a symbiosis confirmed by the piled-up houses and the remains of the so-called Thracian-Macedonian pottery, discovered by the archaeological dig. [3] The city flourished during the 6th and 5th BC. century and this is confirmed by both the architectural findings and the participation of the city in the fund of the Athenian Alliance. Its prosperity continued until the founding of Amphipolis in 437 BC. The city begins to lose importance and power, when it is destroyed by the passage of Philip's army in 357 BC. The control of the area, after the destruction of Argilos, passes to one of the Macedonian partners of Philip II and the city was no longer inhabited except in its citadel. [4] Finds from ancient Argilos are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Amphipolis and the Archaeological Museum of Serres.
