Ancient Minoan Village ruins for exploring. Please be respectful of the area and leave it for future visitors to enjoy and explore.

Most people visiting this amazing place are not aware of Itanos' history. About 4,000 years ago this was one of the most important seaports in the world. The ruins sit next to several Neolithic sites, Minoan ruins, Hellenic seaport, Roman and a Venetian fort. The vibe of the place is remarkable, as is the pristine beauty of the place. I recommend a little Google investigation before going. It will enhance the feeling one has reached an important destination on this world.

An excellent spot for a day at the beach with some ruin crawling over some neat old foundations. A small stone house type structure still has some walls up with some windows, door frames and what looks like a chimney and perhaps oven in one set of rooms. There is a ruin of an old church near by it. Historically it was a major port city through ancient times and it controlled much of the coastline on the eastern side of the island of Crete. Per the Wikipedia page: The archeological site of Itanos is open to the public. It is possible to see the ruins of houses, city walls and Christian churches.

The ancient settlement is easy to find with a fair amount of parking available nearby. And then you wander amongst the stones and pottery shards while your imagination fills in the scene. The basilica is marked, but the rest is up to you! A wonderful peaceful place close to excellent natural beaches. Recommended.
