It is worth going down the path and find the old bridge with arches and the small church.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Το γεφύρι της Καρύταινας είναι χτισμένο στα χρόνια της Φραγκοκρατίας.
Έχει μήκος 52,80μ. και πλάτος 3,70μ. με μέσο ύψος τα 9,20 μ. από την στάθμη του ποταμού Αλφειού.
Σήμερα, σώζονται τα 3 από τα 5 τόξα του. Το μεσαίο ανατινάχθηκε κατά τον Εμφύλιο και το μέρος που έχει καταρρεύσει έχει αντικατασταθεί με ένα ξύλινο τμήμα.
Η σημερινή του μορφή δεν είναι και η αρχική. Το γεφύρι ανακατασκευάστηκε στα μέσα του 14ου αιώνα από τον Ραούλ Μανουήλ τον Μελική (όπως μαρτυρά μια επιτοίχια επιγραφή) ο οποίος και πρόσθεσε το μικρό εκκλησάκι στη βάση του 2ου βάθρου στη δυτική μεριά.
The bridge of Karytaina is built during the years of Frankish rule.
It has a length of 52.80m. and width 3.70m. with an average height of 9.20 m. from the level of the river Alfeios.
Today, 3 of its 5 bows survive. The middle one was blown up during the Civil War and the part that collapsed has been replaced with a wooden part.
Its current form is not the original. The bridge was rebuilt in the middle of the 14th century by Raoul Manuel Melikis (as evidenced by a wall inscription) who added the small church at the base of the 2nd pedestal on the west side.

A very cool place, I highly recommend visiting if you are near the village of Karitena. The bridge was built to unite the Karetina castle with Messinia and was previously depicted on old 5000 drachma banknotes.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The old bridge was built when the area was occupied by Franks to link the caste with the rest of the countryside. More exciting though is the fact that, on this bridge and in March 2021, Kolokotronis won the first decisive battle in Greece's liberation from the Ottoman rule! Lovely views of Alfeios river both from the bridge itself and from the bank, as well as a small church built on its base.
