Κατασκευάστηκε στους Μακεδονικούς χρόνους (αρχές του 3ου αι. π.Χ.) και είχε ως πρότυπό του το μεγάλο Διονυσιακό θέατρο της Αθήνας. Το κοίλον του ήταν εν μέρει θεμελιωμένο στο φυσικό βράχο. Στο ανώτερο τμήμα του, όπου δεν υπήρχε ο φυσικός βράχος, τα εδώλια του κοίλου εδράζονταν σε τεχνητή λίθινη θεμελίωση, η οποία καλυπτόταν με χώμα. Δημιουργούνταν δηλαδή ένα είδος τεχνητής επίχωσης για τη θεμελίωση του ανώτερου τμήματος του κοίλου. Το υλικό κατασκευής του θεάτρου ήταν ο γνωστός υποκίτρινος Πειραϊκός λίθος, ο οποίος δυστυχώς είναι αρκετά εύθρυπτος. Από τα εδώλια του αρχαίου θεάτρου δε σώζεται σήμερα κανένα. Η διάμετρος του κοίλου υπολογίζεται στα 66,5 μ. Το αρχαίο θέατρο διέθετε ορχήστρα, διαμέτρου 23,4 μ. Μεγάλος λίθινος αποστραγγιστικός αγωγός απομάκρυνε τα νερά της βροχής από την ορχήστρα. Από το σκηνικό οικοδόμημα διατηρούνται ελάχιστα κατάλοιπα. The theater can be visited as it is located in the courtyard of the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus. It was built in the Macedonian times (early 3rd century BC) and had as its model the great Dionysian theater of Athens. Its cavity was partly based on natural rock. In its upper part, where there was no natural rock, the hollow seats were based on an artificial stone foundation, which was covered with soil. In other words, a kind of artificial embankment was created for the foundation of the upper part of the cavity. The construction material of the theater was the well-known pale yellow Piraeus stone, which unfortunately is quite fragile. None of the seats of the ancient theater survives today. The diameter of the cavity is estimated at 66.5 m. The ancient theater had an orchestra, 23.4 m in diameter. A large stone drainage pipe removed the rainwater from the orchestra. Very little remains are preserved from the stage building.
