Ιδρύθηκε από τον Τεγέα, γιο του Λυκάονα και εγγονό του Πελασγού και ήταν από τις σπουδαιότερες πόλεις της αρχαίας Αρκαδίας, έδρα των τελευταίων μυθικών Αρκάδων βασιλιάδων. Αποτελούνταν από τους δήμους Κορυθέων, Γαρεατών, Φυλακέων, Καρυατών, Οιατών, Βωταχιδών, Μανθυρέων, Εχενιδών, Αφειδάντιων και τις φυλές Ιποθίτιδα, Καριώτιδα, Απολονιάτιδα και Αθηναιάτιδα. Στην πόλη υπήρχε το ιερό της Αλέας Αθηνάς το οποίο είχε κατασκευάσει ο Σκόπας την εποχή που άρχοντας της Αθήνας ήταν ο Διόφαντος. Σύμφωνα με την μυθολογία ο Ναός ονομάστηκε έτσι από τον Αλέα εγγονό του Αρκάδα που τον είχε χτίσει. Μέσα στο ιερό μέσα υπήρχε άγαλμα της Αθηνάς από ελεφαντόδοντο, άγαλμα του Ασκληπιού , άγαλμα της Υγείας και τα δόντια του Ερυμάνθιου κάπρου τα οποία όταν οι Ρωμαίοι προσάρτησαν την περιοχή στην Ρωμαϊκή αυτοκρατορία τα μετέφεραν στη Ρώμη. Η Θεά Αθηνά ήταν η πολιούχος της πόλης και προς τιμήν της γίνονταν οι αγώνες Αλεαία. Σήμερα ο ναός δεν υπάρχει πλέον και λέγεται ότι τμήματά του χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στην ανοικοδόμηση του ναού της Παναγίας που βρίσκεται κοντά στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο. Tegea was a city in ancient Arcadia, originally from a settlement. It was founded by Tegeas, son of Lycaon and grandson of Pelasgos and was one of the most important cities of ancient Arcadia, the seat of the last mythical Arcadian kings. It consisted of the municipalities of Korythea, Gareata, Fylakea, Karyata, Oiata, Votachidon, Manthyreon, Echenidon, Afeidanti and the tribes Ipothitida, Kariotida, Apolloniatida and Athinaiatida. In the city there was the sanctuary of Alea Athena which was built by Skopas at the time when Diophantus was the ruler of Athens. According to mythology, the Temple was named after Alekas, the grandson of Arkadas, who had built it. Inside the sanctuary there was a statue of Athena made of ivory, a statue of Asclepius, a statue of Health and the teeth of Erymanthus the boar which when the Romans annexed the area to the Roman Empire they transported to Rome. The Goddess Athena was the patron saint of the city and in her honor the Aleia struggles took place. Today the temple no longer exists and it is said that parts of it were used in the reconstruction of the church of Panagia located near the archeological site.

Impressive site of the ancient Temple of Aleas Athena. The huge thrown vertebrae make you wonder how beautiful the Temple would be full and upright.
