The walk (from the southern suburbs) starts from the beach area of Palaio Faliro, specifically from the Stavros Niarchos foundation cultural centre. We are driving past the Syngrou Avenue, a very lively road which connects the southern suburbs with the centre of Athens. Driving some more we see the national museum of modern art on our right side. On our left side, in the distance there is the famous hill of Filopapou, which surrounds the entire north side of the Acropolis hill. Moving on, on the right side we see the temple of Olympian Zeus, from which the big pedestrian area of Dionysiou Areopagitou street starts. It is one of the most beautiful streets and it leads to the Plaka area (an old city in Athens underneath the rock of acropolis), the museum of Acropolis and Monastiraki. Walking up the street we see the Hadrian’s Arch and very close to it there is the Greek parliament. Next to it, on Amalia avenue there is the National Garden. Heading east on Vasilissis Sofias avenue we can see the Benaki museum of Greek culture and the museum of Cycladic art. The circular route around the historical centre is completed by entering the Vasileos Konstantinou avenue and driving past the “Glass Runner” statue. On the way back we drive past Kallirois street and we can admire the Panathenaic Stadium which holds historical and cultural significance. That is where the Olympic flame goes a few moments before its journey towards the country that hosts the Olympic Games. Finally we see the Zappeion and we once again enter the Syngrou avenue heading back towards the place we started from.
