TLDR; Staff was rude, sarcastic and unprofessional when I was trying to return an item.
I wanted to return a phone case to the Ermou store that my mom bought me as a gift, without checking if it was the correct model for my phone. I went to the cashier and gave her the phone case that was still in its paper & plastic case with my receipt. She looked at it for a moment and then walked over to a male colleague and whispered back and forth till she came back to announce that she can’t accept this. She said that the packaging has been opened and the fur pom pom part of it was messed with. I explained to her that in order to open the package you’d need to rip the back which had clearly never been touched. She continued saying that the plastic can be lifted and the case can be taken off the packaging and then put back. (I’ll post a pic of the case so anyone can see that would be simply impossible, cause if you just tried to lift the plastic off, all the paper around it would rip). I told her that if taking the case out and putting it back in was possible she should try to do it so I could see it as well. Instead of accepting defeat she then turned back to her male colleague and said “take it, I can’t be bothered with this”. Bershka staff clearly doesn’t realize their job is to help customers out.
I was then passed to the male staff member who was definitely trying to be more polite (not necessarily succeeding) who said that they can’t accept returns when the item is cracked. I proceeded to show him and explain that only the plastic was cracked and the case that was made out of silicone clearly wasn’t. He said that he understood and he didn’t accuse me of cracking the packaging myself, but I should’ve paid attention to it and not bought it in the first place. A different female colleague then decided to chime in and agree with him and say they couldn’t return the product back to a shelf because of its condition. I then said to both that I have seen countless products and tags being slightly cracked or ripped while still on their stands, much like I’ve seen many ripped clothes while in store. She was quick to reply that as soon as a product rips, they remove it from the store. As if there’s someone checking every single one of their thousands of items constantly to do that. I told her that in any case, the product itself was perfectly fine so there was no reason for me (or for my mom anyway) not to buy it just because the plastic had a little rip in it. She then sighed and exclaimed “ok, it’s only like 3 euros anyway isn’t it”. Why does it matter how much the item is? What gives your staff the right to treat people differently depending on how much their item cost? Looks like you can’t get proper customer support at Bershka unless you spend 100€.
In the end the male staff member called a guy who I assume was his manager and he gave the phone case a glimpse and said it’s fine and it can be returned. Wouldn’t be a lot easier if that was done from the start. At the end of the day, my mom didn’t notice the crack on the plastic around the case when purchasing and the staff was probably trying to follow whatever protocol they were trained to follow. That still doesn’t excuse the truly unprofessional, rude and condescending way they dealt with me. Ps. I work in retail as well and was being polite to them the entire time, even when they got my blood boiling. I will definitely not return to any of their stores, cause when I shop somewhere I expect to at least be treated with some dignity.
