Lydia Baptistery is a unique and inspiring place with great historical importance in the Christian religion. According to tradition, this is the place where the Apostle Paul baptized Lydia of Thyatira (in the Zygakti river). Lydia is the woman mentioned in the New Testament who is regarded as the first documented convert to Christianity in Europe. Today baptistery is open and operated marriages and baptisms. Every year, in celebration of St. Lydia of Philippisias (on May 20), Cristians are baptized at the same place. Beauytiful site and highly recomended. Don't miss also the ancient theatre of Philippi that is located 1 km south-east to the church!!

A historic church named after the first European Christian, Lydia, baptized by Apostle Paul. The building has an eye-catching exterior architecture. The interior offers mosaics of the 12 Apostles and an ancient map of the eastern Mediterranean. Colorful frescos cover the walls and the dome. At the entrance to the grounds you find a cafeteria.

This traditional site of Lydia’s water baptism is just a few minutes away on foot from the archaeological site of Philippi. I was there in high summer and the temperature went up to almost 40 degrees Celsius. However, this serene place was cooling and the chilling river water was refreshing. Highly recommended.

Beautiful baptistry on the site St. Paul baptized Lydia. The interior has amazing paintings of the local history of St. Paul in Greece. Also a wonderful mosaic map of Paul’s journey in entrance. Area set up by the river where the actual baptism took place.
