V	Vangelis Ionas on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Σ το κέντρο της παλιάς πόλης και σε αρκετό βάθος κάτω από την επιφάνεια της γης βρίσκεται ο περίλαμπρος παλιος μητροπολιτικός ναός των Αγ. Θεοδώρων, μεγάλη ορθογώνια Βασιλική. Σύμφωνα με μια παράδοση ιδρύθηκε για πρώτη φορά κατά την παλαιοχριστιανική περίοδο. Σύμφωνα με μια άλλη παράδοση είναι χτισμένος πάνω στα ερείπια ενός αρχαίου ναού. Ο ναός κτίστηκε το έτος 1224 μ.Χ. από το δεσπότη της Ηπείρου Θεόδωρο ’γγελο Κομνηνό σ' ανάμνηση της μεγάλης νίκης του επί των Φράγκων, λίγο έξω από την πόλη. Η Ν.Δ. πλευρά του ναού Πρώτη αναφορά της Παλαιάς μητρόπολης έχουμε σε χρυσόβουλο του Ανδρονίκου του πρεσβύτερου το 1321 μ.Χ. Με λεπτομέρειες την περιγράφει ο Σερραίος ρήτορας Θεόδωρος Πεδιάσιμος στο περίφημο δοκίμιό του "Εκφρασις περί του Ιερού των Φερών (δηλ. Σερρών)" του 14ου αιώνα. Στο βορειοδυτικό μέρος του ναού υπάρχει παρεκκλήσι που ίσως κτίστηκε το 1364 για να ενταφιαστεί ο πατριάρχης Καλλίστος. Πλίνθινη επιγραφή στο νότιο, μακρύ τείχος του ναού, που λέει: "Εν έτει ΕΨΚΕ + ο ταπεινός μητροπολίτης Σερρών Στέφανος ο κτίτωρ", μαρτυρεί ότι το τείχος γκρεμίστηκε και ξαναχτίστηκε το 1725. Η νότια πλευρά του ναού Ο ναός των Αγ. Θεοδώρων είναι περισσότερο γνωστός για τα περίφημα ψηφιδωτά του, από τα οποία ύστερα από την πυρκαγιά του 1913 σώζεται μόνο εκείνο στο οποίο απεικονίζεται ο Απόστολος Ανδρέας και διακρίνονται τα χέρια του Αποστόλου Λουκά. Στην οροφή υπήρχε και ένα τεράστιο ψηφιδωτό που απεικόνιζε τον Μυστικό Δείπνο. Ο ιστορικός αυτός ναός υπέστη πολλές επισκευές και ανακαινίσεις στο πέρασμα των χρόνων, οι οποίες άλλαξαν την αρχική του μορφή. Κατά την μεγάλη πυρκαγιά δε του 1913 κάηκε σχεδόν ολοσχερώς, η δε αναστήλωση του έγινε αργότερα από την αρχαιολογική υπηρεσία. Ιστορικά ανάγεται στον 5ο ή 6ο μΧ αιώνα. Ανακατασκευασθηκε πολλές φορές. Το 1205 ο ναός καταστράφηκε όπως και όλη η πόλη των Σερρών από τους Βούλγαρους. Το 1571 λεηλατηθηκε από τους Τούρκους ενώ το 1849 από πυρκαγιά έπαθε πολλές ζημιές. Το 1938 άρχισαν εργασίες και ολοκληρώθηκαν το 1959 στην μορφή που είναι σήμερα.
