Η Ανάληψη εορτάζεται από την Εκκλησία την 40η ημέρα από την Ανάσταση του Κυρίου (10 Ιουνίου 2021). Την ημέρα αυτή γιορτάζουν όσες φέρουν το όνομα Ανάληψη. Το εκκλησιαστικό γεγονός της Αναλήψεως περιγράφεται από τους ευαγγελιστές Μάρκο (ιστ’, 19), Λουκά ( κδ’, 50-52) και Ιωάννη (στ’, 62 και κ’, 17), στις Πράξεις των Αποστόλων (α’ 2-9), στις επιστολές του Αποστόλου Παύλου (Προς Εφεσίους δ’ 8-10, Προς Εβραίους δ’,14 και ζ’, 26, Α' Προς Τιμόθεον γ’, 16) και στην Α’ Καθολική Επιστολή του Αποστόλου Πέτρου (γ’ 22). Μόνο ο ευαγγελιστής Ματθαίος παραλείπει κάθε μνεία για το γεγονός αυτό. Σύμφωνα με τις ως άνω περιγραφές της Καινής Διαθήκης, η Ανάληψη έγινε στο Όρος των Ελαιών στην Ιερουσαλήμ μπροστά στους μαθητές του Χριστού, οι οποίοι παρακολούθησαν με δέος την απομάκρυνση του Διδασκάλου. Η πατερική παράδοση τονίζει ιδιαίτερα τον υπερφυσικό χαρακτήρα της Αναλήψεως του Κυρίου, το όποιο περιλήφθηκε στη δογματική διδασκαλία της Εκκλησίας με τη χαρακτηριστική αναφορά στο Σύμβολο της Πίστεως («και ανελθόντα εις τους ουρανούς και καθεζόμενον εκ δεξιών του Πατρός και πάλιν ερχόμενον μετά δόξης...»).
