★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Remote and peaceful. About as "off grid" as you can get. No roads, no cars, no wifi. The only locals are mules (used as transportation and for supplies) and, rarer still, elusive hermit monks dwelling secluded from modern society amongst the steep and jagged mountain crags and outcroppings. Not for the fainthearted or those with weak or feeble constitutions, heart ailments, breathing or knee problems as there are very few level or smooth areas, paved walkways and the area is prone to occasional rock slides. NOTE: Special access permission is required and available for men only through Mt. Athos Pilgrim Bureau with offices in Ouranoupolis and Thessaloniki.
