I.N. Saint Charalambos

Agios Charalambos is located inside the Venetian castle of Koroni and is the cemetery church of the city. This is a building with a long history. In ancient times there was here the ancient temple of Dryopas, ancestor of the Dorians, who was considered the son of Apollo. During the 16th century the Venetians built on the foundations of the ancient temple a majestic temple dedicated to Saint Rocco while in the northwest corner of the temple they built a vigla (military observatory). The catholic church of Agios Rokkos, protector against the plague, was built in gratitude for the redemption of the city from the plague that ravaged it from 1689 to 1698. The fact testifies to a marble slab of Morosini (1689) in Latin is built into the interior of the gynaeconite. Later the temple passed into the hands of the Turks who turned it into a mosque and the vigla into a minaret. In 1828 the mosque was transformed by the Greeks into a church of Agios Charalambos and the minaret into a bell tower. The inauguration took place on October 21, 1828 by the Bishop of Androusa, Joseph. The black page in its history was written on Sunday, November 25, 2012, which was completely destroyed by fire. For years it was deserted without anyone being interested in its restoration. In 2018, restoration work began and for this you will still meet him with many scaffolding. We hope it will soon regain its former glory.
