Interesting area with long history of habitation situated on a strategic commanding part of town. Many traces of older part of town adjacent to the Venetian ramparts. On a side street, also accessible from the harbour frontage by the fountain, are the excellently notated ancient Minoan remains showing part of the residential area dating around 2000 BC.Looking closely you can see different levels of occupation. There was a palace in Chania at this time, just like Knossos, Malia,Phaestos etc.You can feel a connection, not just idle tourism !!

The hill of Kastelli, dominating the natural harbor and the plain of Khania, has been chosen as the most convenient place for the establishment of the first organized Minoan settlement in the area of Khania. This goes back to the Prepalatial period (3000-2000 B.C.), as the systematic excavations in the area have shown (fig. 1). In all the years to come, this same hill has always remained the centre and starting- point of the life of the settlement. Most scholars identify the modern city of Khania with the site of Minoan and Classical Kydonia, although the undeniable proof yet to be found. The results of the excavations, which have increased in the recent years mainly due to extensive civic works, enforce this idea day after day, since they bring to light the most important city of western Crete of both the prehistoric and the classical times, namely Kydonia, according to the written sources.

In the old times here was a Castle. Now you can see only foundations of the building. If you have a little bit of imagination you will find this place interesting. I enjoyed that.

Really nice historical place to explore Chania's history especially in times of Venice occupation of Crete. Ideal to combine with a visit to the local museums.

Five star rating for the history of this place. Here is the archeological site of the ancient Kydonia, one of the first three cities on Crete that, as they say, king Minos founded. This is just one of many sites in the modern day Chania uncovering the five millennium old city Kydonia. The most of the excavations were made after German bombings in WW2 when the people working to remove the rubble found pottery dating back to 3rd millennium B.C. belonging to ancient Minoan culture.
