On this hill were the damned old sanctuaries of Gaia (Mother Earth), themselves created out of chaos and mother of the Titans. Kronos one of the titans was father of Zeus', chief god of the Olympic gods and Greek god world. Later the Romans adopted this god structure and simply put their names on them (e.g. Zeus = Jupiter, Poseidon = Neptune). But why was this hill chosen by the people at that time as the location of the sanctuaries and not one of the other partially higher hills?

The Saturnus hill rises north of its sacred sanctuary
Olympia and is one of the most famous and important-
its more symbols. Its name, as "Saturn", is
given to Pindar (Olympians, I '50), was given by him
Hercules, who dedicated him to Saturn's grandfather.
Pausanias (VI, 20, 1-2) mentions that at the top
the priests called "Basil" sacrificed to him
Saturn at the spring equinox, the month of Deer (March).
Besides, on the southern slopes of Kronius they were worshiped
many deities (Gaia, Saturn, Eileithia, Rea, Idea
Hercules, Themis) and Nymphs, according to prehistoric times
years before the worship of Zeus even began.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Unfortunately, we did not find a way onto the hill. Everything was fenced in, all gates locked. Would have been great to have a look down at the Olympic stadium site.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Amazing view from the hill top...sadly no view on Ancient Olimpia site apart from section of stadium...but the views of the hills to the east are truly rewarding that short hike.
