Έχει μήκος 7,9 περίπου χιλιόμετρα, πλάτος 1,5 ως 5,4 χιλιόμετρα, μέσο βάθος 4 - 5 μέτρα, μέγιστο βάθος 11 μέτρα και επιφάνεια 19,4 τετραγωνικά χιλιόμετρα. Περιβάλλεται από τα όρη Μιτσικέλι και των ανατολικών αντερεισμάτων του Τομάρου (ή της Ολύτσικας) και σχηματίζεται από τα ύδατα τριών κυρίως πηγών (Ντραμπάντοβας, Σεντενίκου και Κρύας), που αναβλύζουν στους πρόποδες του Μιτσικελίου. Συνδέεται με τους θρύλους της Κυρά – Φροσύνης και του Ντουραχάν. Οικολογία Οι όχθες της είναι πυκνόφυτες και τα βουνά της Ηπείρου καθρεφτίζονται στα νερά της. Χρονολογείται από το 10.000 π.Χ αν και στο παρελθόν η στάθμη της είχε μειωθεί αξιοσημείωτα, σήμερα αποτελεί ένα ζωντανό κομμάτι χλωρίδας και πανίδας της περιοχής. Η λίμνη αυτή είναι ιχθυοτρόφος, περίφημα είναι τα χέλια και οι καραβίδες . Άποψη της λίμνης των Ιωαννίνων Στις όχθες της λίμνης βρίσκεται εγκατεστημένος σήμερα ο ιχθυογεννητικός σταθμός της Δημοτικής Επιχείρησης Λίμνης Ιωαννίνων (ΔΕΛΙ), στον οποίο παράγονται κάποιες ποσότητες ελληνικού χαβιαρίου από οξύρρυγχους ρωσικής προέλευσης. Στις ίδιες εγκαταστάσεις παράγονται επίσης κατά μέσον όρο 100.000 γόνοι, που εξάγεται σε ιχθυοτροφικές μονάδες κυρίως του εξωτερικού, καθώς και διάφορες άλλες ποικιλίες γόνου γλυκών νερών για τον εμπλουτισμό ελληνικών λιμνών και ποταμών. Το νησί της λίμνης Στο μέσο περίπου της Λίμνης βρίσκεται μικρή νησίδα, στην οποία είναι χτισμένος ο ομώνυμος οικισμός, ο οποίος έχει σήμερα 347 κατοίκους σύμφωνα με την απογραφή του 2001. Στη νησίδα υπάρχει το μοναστήρι του Αγίου Παντελεήμονα, όπου το 1822 δολοφονήθηκε ο Αλή Πασάς.
