This is Acropolis walls and Vlatadon monastery in Thessaloniki. The monastery was probably built in the fourteenth century. It's a beautiful monastery perched on a high ground very close to the city walls.

A hidden gem among the small houses of the upper part of the old city of Thessaloniki. Definitely worth visiting even if you don't have a religious interest in it.

This was my favourite place in Thessaloniki when I visited for 2 days. I know some people might think it's a bit strange to like such a small place, but this tiny old church exuded such peace... it was infectious... and so, so quiet.... I was on a bit of a high afterwards. This is one of my favourite feelings in life. I've only had it a handful of times. A couple of times in temples in Thailand and a couple of times in nature. There is a nice view from this place looking out over Thessaloniki also, and the walk up is through some very pretty old streets. Altogether a must-visit hidden gem for the soul!

You should visit this church mostly for the beautiful mosaic and the friendly people watching the church who gladly answer your questions. However this church is only open from 10:00-14:00 as are the Jewish museum and a lot of other churches in the city. The mosaic displays a vision of Ezekiel (seen on the left) of a theophany or in this case Jesus(the one in the middle of the eye) coming to earth and the prophet/philosopher Habbakuk (on the right). It's quite unique not only because it survived the Ottoman ruling (most churches were transformed into mosks and since any devine depiction is forbidden in mosks, most works of art were destroyed or damaged in an attempt to cover them up) and because it's a depiction of Jesus instead of Madonna and child (usually depicted in the central dome) but also because it's one of the few depictions in the world of Jesus without a beard. The walk to the church is quite long and uphill but definitely worth it once you reach your destination. Ps: for who wants to know: the church is also declared a UNESCO world heritage site. Ps: the animals/angel around Jesus depict the evangelists.

Beautiful view from this gorgeous place. A still functioned monastery on the top of Thessaloniki. Here are also birds in big cages to see…
