★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Get here via boat with captain Nick from Chania harbour. Forget the other boats, this is the best and you get to meet and touch live octopus. Awesome guy, well worth the money.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Swam to the beach from a boat that was moored as part of a tour. Obviously not a destination for a whole day out (as it's only slightly larger than a beach towel and has no shade or facilities), but fun to climb around for half an hour

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Great snorkelling spot. Book one of the boat rides (20ish euros for 3.5 hours). The water is super salty and buoyant. There’s an old underwater plane wreck too.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Lazareta is a small islet close to Chania's beach and, apart from being quieter, the islet itself is not of much interest - you could walk round it in under 5 minutes. Its real value (and hence the 4 stars) is as a destination for a handful of boats coming from Chania harbour, offering snorkelling, swimming, sunset cruises and such like. It is far enough away from the beach to deter most swimmers, the water is beautifully clear, and it adds a focal point to the view on those sunset cruises.
