Ο μακεδονικός τάφος ΙΙΙ στον Άγιο Αθανάσιο Θεσσαλονίκης Κατά μήκος του ανατολικού πρανούς του τύμβου βρίσκονται δύο ασύλητοι κιβωτιόσχημοι τάφοι, η έρευνα των οποίων απέδωσε ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία για την κοινωνική τάξη των νεκρών και τα ταφικά έθιμα της εποχής. Στο κέντρο ακριβώς του τεράστιου τύμβου και σε βάθος 12 μ. από την κορυφή του βρίσκεται ο μικρός, μονοθάλαμος μακεδονικός τάφος, που βρέθηκε συλημένος αλλά κατάκοσμος από τοιχογραφίες, με εκπληκτικά χρώματα σε πολύ καλή κατάσταση διατήρησης. Το μοναδικό αυτό μνημείο χρονολογείται στο τελευταίο τέταρτο του 4ου αι. π.Χ. Η πρόσοψη του τάφου είναι κατάγραφη. Το τριγωνικό αέτωμα κοσμούν μυθικοί γρύπες με ολόχρυσα φτερά, ακολουθούν βαθυκύανα τρίγλυφα και λευκές μετόπες, ενώ στη στενή ζωφόρο επάνω από το θυραίο άνοιγμα ξετυλίγεται μια σκηνή συμποσίου, τόσο οικεία από διάφορες φιλολογικές μαρτυρίες ή την αγγειογραφία, αλλά για πρώτη φορά τόσο ζωντανά μπροστά στα μάτια των επισκεπτών. Στο κέντρο εικονίζονται έξι στεφανωμένοι συμποσιαστές, ξαπλωμένοι νωχελικά σε ανάκλιντρα, να απολαμβάνουν τα πλούσια εδέσματα και τη μουσική της κιθάρας και του δίαυλου, που παίζουν νεαρές γυναίκες, ενώ πεζοί και έφιπποι άνδρες σπεύδουν να ενωθούν μαζί τους. Άλλοι οπλίτες, ντυμένοι με τη μακεδονική ενδυμασία, ακουμπώντας χαλαρά στα δόρατα και στις χαρακτηριστικές λαμπρές ασπίδες, παρακολουθούν ήρεμα τη σκηνή. Συγκλονιστική είναι η παράσταση των δύο ολόσωμων μορφών νέων, που τυλιγμένοι στις μακριές χλαμύδες, γεμάτοι θλίψη, στέκουν σιωπηλοί δίπλα στην είσοδο του τάφου, αιώνιοι φρουροί του νεκρού συμπολεμιστή τους. Πρόκειται αναμφίβολα για τον τάφο ενός επιφανούς Μακεδόνα στρατιωτικού, όπως υποδηλώνουν και τα υπολείμματα του πραγματικού οπλισμού, που βρέθηκαν στο σχεδόν κατεστραμμένο από τους αρχαιοκάπηλους θάλαμο.

The Macedonian tomb III in Agios Athanasios, Thessaloniki Along the eastern slope of the mound are two unmarked coffin-shaped tombs, the research of which yielded interesting facts about the social order of the dead and the burial customs of the time. Right in the center of the huge mound and at a depth of 12 m from the top is the small, single-chambered Macedonian tomb, which was found looted but decorated with murals, with amazing colors in very good condition. This unique monument dates back to the last quarter of the 4th c. e.g. The facade of the tomb is recorded. The triangular gable is adorned with mythical griffins with golden wings, followed by deep cyan triglyphs and white metopes, while in the narrow frieze above the doorway unfolds a banquet scene, so familiar from various literary testimonies or angiography, but for the first time so vivid in front of the visitors. The centerpiece depicts six crowned symposium players, lying lazily on couches, enjoying the rich delicacies and music of guitar and bus, played by young women, while men on foot and on horseback rush to join them. Other hoplites, dressed in Macedonian attire, leaning loosely on their spears and characteristic shiny shields, calmly watch the scene. Shocking is the representation of the two full-length young men, wrapped in long chlamys, full of sadness, standing silently at the entrance of the tomb, eternal guards of their dead comrade. It is undoubtedly the tomb of a prominent Macedonian soldier, as indicated by the remains of real weapons, which were found in the chamber almost destroyed by the archaeologists.
