On the road between Parikia and Naoussa of Paros is the male Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi Longovarda, one of the most important monasteries of the 19th and 20th century in Greece, while its abbot, for many decades until his death in 1980, was the blessed saint Elder Philotheos Zervakos. The monastery was founded in 1638 by the prelate of Naoussa Christoforos Paleologos (the Catholic was built in 1657). In 1652 the monastery of Longovarda became Patriarchal and Stavropegian. It went through severe trials so that in 1800 to 1825 it was deserted and abandoned. But divine providence introduced new founders: Philotheos Georgiou and Hierotheos Ioannou and the nephews of the second Philotheos and Hierotheos Bosyniotes, brothers from the Peloponnese. This period of the monastery (1825 - 1930) is characterized as the "golden age" of Longovarda, where lived saints and wise departed with the above abbots Philotheos and Hierotheos. The next great period of the monastery (1930 - 1980) is covered by the presence and action of its leading abbot, Father Filotheos Zervakos. The holy elder Philotheos Zervakos was distinguished for his spiritual and philanthropic work, as one of the most important figures of Orthodoxy in Greece in the 20th century. He helped many children from poor families in Paros to study. And during the German Occupation, he protected resistance fighters and allies, while he was the one who saved 125 hostages from execution, mediating with self-sacrifice to the German commander. Every year in the monastery, on the 23rd of July, the commemoration of this event is celebrated, when with the mediation of the holy elder Filotheos Zervakos, the Virgin Mary prevented the execution of the 125 young people of Paros in retaliation for the sabotage at the German airport. Also, at his urging, the monks of the monastery fought in Albania.
