It is one of the most beautiful and oldest historical monasteries in the area !!! Very clear, incredible view with a nice story! The nuns do everything to maintain it and to serve the Monastery like this, always friendly and submissive !!! (despite the efforts of some, after the area has caught fire, two - three times the area) !!!!! At the bottom is a small church of Agios Nektarios !!! It is said that in the years of the Greek revolution that the Turks were chasing Kolokotronis and his people and he jumped during his pursuit from the mountain and did not suffer anything and was saved !!! Also, in the past, mothers who had their child sick threw it away and when they went there they threw it from the courtyard, down !!! (I do not know if it is true) !!! However, it is worth someone to visit it !! The icon that is kept in the chapel of Agios Antonios is of the Virgin Mary and celebrates on the 23rd of August !!!

An unprecedented spiritual experience. A hidden precious spiritual jewel for the whole area of the Tower. The services in the small chapel of Agios Antonios are a spiritual awakening.

Our cruise took us to Katakolon from where you could take a shore excursion to Ancient Olympia where the Olympic Games originated. Having done some research we decided to book a half day tour with Katakolon Taxi where we planned our own itinerary and in addition to visiting Ancient Olympia we were able to get to see the beautiful Kremasti Monastery and Klio’s honey farm. This made great sense for us as we really wanted to see Kremasti Monastery and could visit Olympia before it got crowded and while the heat of the sun was at its lowest. Other options which were available were a visit to St Andrew’s Beach or an olive oil production site. The cost was €230 and while the shore excursion was cheaper at $90 per person we felt the additional cost was worth it. We travelled as a couple but if you have three or four people travelling this option works out cheaper than the shore excursion and gives you great flexibility. The Monastery of Kremasti (Hanging Monastery) is located 30 km from Katakolon and 15 km from Ancient Olympia. Almost hanging from the side of a mountain, this Greek Orthodox Monastery offers panoramic views of the stunning landscape of Erymanthos. The complex history of this church goes back some 800 years. According to the legend, one night, shepherds of the area saw a light through a hole in the rock. They tied a man with a rope and he went in to find the suspended icon of the Virgin Mary. They couldn’t explain the presence of the icon there, so it was considered to be a sign from God that a monastery should be founded here. The first monks settled near the cave and built a small chapel inside it. The Holy Monastery of Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Kremasti was founded in the early 1700’s. In 1930 the monastery was converted into a nunnery. Many people visit this monastery for the miraculous icon it possesses. It is said that the wicks of the oil lamp burning in front of the icon help couples who have fertility problems. The monastery has an annual celebration on 23rd August. Thousands of pilgrims on the eve during Vespers and on the day of the celebration flock to worship the Virgin Mary. Nowadays the monastery is fully operational with 10 nuns living and praying inside. We met with a nun who was praying there when we arrived. The atmosphere in the Monastery was very serene and overall it was a truly memorable experience. The view from the Monastery is spectacular and it presents some great photo opportunities. This place is well worth visiting and if you do you will be one of the thousands of visitors that the Monastery welcomes throughout the year. If you decide to visit this nunnery make sure to dress appropriately. If not, there are a few (not so fashionable and worn at least a hundred times by all kinds of people) skirts and trousers at the entrance.
