Υπήρξε μία από τις αγνότερες μορφές του Αγώνα για την Ανεξαρτησία. Τον Μάρτιο του 1821 έδωσε το έναυσμα για την επανάσταση της Χαλκιδικής από τη Μονή Εσφιγμένου στο Άγιο Όρος. Οι ελλείψεις όμως σε πολεμοφόδια και τρόφιμα οδήγησαν την επανάσταση σε αποτυχία. Ο Εμμανουήλ Παπάς θυσίασε οικογένεια, παιδιά, πλούτη και την ίδια του τη ζωή στο βωμό της ελευθερίας.
