It goes unnoticed by most visitors but it is very curious. It acted as a kind of legal bulletin board for the ten districts (called tribes) into which the state of Athens was divided. There the decrees and laws that affected each one of the tribes were published, under the sculpture of the hero that gave name to each one of them.

Not much left of this monument with great historical value because of thé story behind it . I learned that around 500 years before Christ Kleisthenes created thé democracy and assigned all Athenians to 10 newly-formed tribes. Each tribe got a specific name and citizenship depended on membership in a tribe. This tribal system was thé foundation on which the Athenian democracy was built. Each tribe was represented in this monument by a bronzen statue of one of these Eponymol Heroes , totally 10. Extremely interesting but unfortunately only some pieces of thé surrounding fence survived along with some blocks from thé original monument base. Very pity but surely worth while visiting when you learn about thé history behind.

What a beautiful park! It extends far beyond just a park though, as it’s reflective history is available for visitors to read more about, and in doing so, gain some significant appreciation for the wonder of Greek culture. The tombstones, walking plots, statues, gardens and the intoxicating enveloping Greek mountains looking down, is truly magnificent! The monuments are beautiful and within walking distance of other Greek must see historical fixtures. There’s no room for monotony when the surroundings are rich with the tapestry of tradition. It’s fun, cultural and a must see stop when you’re visiting or vacationing through the beauty that is Athens. Highly recommended!
