The hill in which the old school of Sykia is located, is an artificial mound ("tumba" on archaeological terms) created by successive layers of habituation starting from the Late Neolithic period up to the contemporary years. The old school which was built in 1910, was constructed on the ruins of an older tower dated back to the 14th century. The tower was part of an installation (metochion) belonging to the Lavra Monastery According to archaeological evidence, the prehistoric activity on the hill extends from the Late Neolithic (4500-3000 Β.c) until Late Bronze Age (1600-1100 B.C). The portable finds that came to light (a relatively large number of stonework and pottery items as well as figurines), would suggest significant manufacturing activity in the area involving cottage industries, metallurgy, and agriculture: evidence suggesting the inhabitants were involved in animal husbandry is absent. The site has the typical features of Prehistoric settlements in the Halkidiki and coexisted with settlements found in the greater Sykia area, including those of Kriaritsi, Koukos and Toroni itself.
