Ο χώρος λειτούργησε ως ορφανοτροφείο μέχρι το 1933 οπότε και άλλαξε την λειτουργία του και μετατράπηκε σε φυλακές. Με το μεγάλο σεισμό του 1938 ολόκληρες οι κτηριακές υποδομές των φυλάκων καταστρέφονται και αμέσως ξεκινούν οι εργασίες για την ανακατασκευή τους, η οποία ολοκληρώθηκε στην αυγή του Β Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου. Το πόσο που δαπανήθηκε για την ανακατασκευή των φυλάκων, ανήλθε στις 10.000.000 δραχμές. Έτσι διαμορφώθηκε ο χώρος όπως τον γνωρίζουμε περίπου σήμερα, με μοναδική εξαίρεση φυσικά τις αυθαίρετες κτηριακές υποδομές που κατασκευάστηκαν μετέπειτα. Οι φυλακές του Ωρωπού έγιναν γρήγορα γνωστές για την καταπάτηση των διεθνών προτύπων λειτουργίας, με κρατούμενους όλων των βαθμίδων και όλων των ηλικιακών ομάδων να βρίσκονται μαζί, στοιβαγμένοι σε θαλάμους. Το 1967 και καθόλα την διάρκεια της Δικτατορίας, οι φυλακές μετατρέπονται σε τόπο εξορίας των πολιτικών κρατούμενων. Ένα ακόμη κολαστήριο, ένα ακόμη σχολείο εθνικοφροσύνης που σκοπός του ήταν να αλλάξει τις απόψεις και τις στρεβλές για το καθεστώς ιδέες των πολιτικών κρατούμενων. Η παύση της λειτουργίας των φυλάκων έρχεται το 1974 με την πτώση της Δικτατορίας. Ο χώρος σιγά σιγά περνά στην παρακμή και την μερική εγκατάλειψη του. Μερική, εφόσον σε έναν ορισμένο χώρο και σε ένα από τα κτήρια ξεκίνησε την λειτουργιά του το Γυμνάσιο της περιοχής του Ωρωπού που φιλοξενήθηκε στον χώρο των παλαιών φυλακών έως το 1989, όταν και μεταφέρθηκε στις νέες του εγκαταστάσεις. Από τότε έως το 2006 στον χώρο φιλοξενήθηκε το Γενικό και Επαγγελματικό Λύκειο της περιοχής. Από τότε έως και σήμερα στον χώρο δραστηριοποιούνται διαφορές πολιτιστικές ομάδες, μια υπηρεσία του δήμου το ωδείο του Ωρωπού, και ένας βρεφονηπιακός σταθμός, με την παραμονή τους να θεωρείται πρόσκαιρη. From then until 2006, the General and Vocational High School of the area was hosted in the area. From then until today, various cultural groups are active in the area, a service of the municipality, the conservatory of Oropos, and a nursery school, with their stay being considered temporary.
