★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The Church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa of Spilia village is a significant church with nearly 80 years of history. The saints represented on its walls internally have been made by well known local Cretan painters ( agiografoi - agiografici).What makes this church so special is that on it’s side stand the Byzantine Icons Museum which has been found from Father Evangelos Sfakianakis a remarkable priest who was born in Spilia village and has gathered various Byzantine Icons of significant archeological value in that museum, worth to visit on appointment with the local priest, since Father Sfakianakis passed away.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Well-preserved frescoes are a typical example of the early Byzantine Cretan school of frescoes. In the picture, the iconostasis separating the apse from the nave - in the Eastern liturgy, the place where the wine is turned into the blood of Christ is not visible.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I expected a bit more. One of those many tiny chapels, but this one with frescos in the interior. However, it is quite dark inside and they have been worn off quite a bit. It still is a bit of a hidden gem, located in a peaceful, beautiful and well maintained area
