There are many free parking spots. If you want to get one you should arrive before 10am. After that the cars will park at the dirt road and you have to walk longer. There is also a small café with drinks and food.

An alternative way to go - no rental car needed! The path to the parking by car is demanding and crawdad but it is not the only way to see the beautiful view. You can go to the beach by boat from Kissamos and then hike up to the parking lot (the famous view is before the parking). Just take good sport shoes and it will take you about 30-40 minutes to go there. We did that and were very happy:)

The car park is just a car park. However, with very tame mountain goats, a small kiosk with friendly salespeople who will give you tips if you have any questions. The goats sleep in the shade of the cars or walk comfortably. At midday, the car park is full, so you have to park hundreds of metres away. The drive to the car park (all gravel and steep climbs) and the walk from the car park to the beach is strenuous and only suitable for fit people. But definitely worth a trip.

Balos is wonderful and the trip down there with the view is totally worth it. But the 7km road of hell you have to pay to drive on is a nightmare. Really hope they can make a drivable road up there instead of the car-killing road with stones and humpes there is now.

Superb beach, would recommend too get the boat too it as the drive to it is hellish & then a 2km walk down a cliff side not for the unfit.

The drive there is rough, if you plan on visiting it, it is better to rent at least a SUV.

Despite the different reviews, we decided to go to Balos beach by a rented car. The smallest one that you can rent. First you have to know that you’ll pay 1€ for each person at the beginning of the path, then you have to drive slow, at around 10km/h all the way and it will be ok. Up there, someone will help you to park your car in order to maximize the place. Afterwards, you have to go down to the beach, it takes 15-25 mn and you’ll arrive. You’ll save 27€ of cruise /person + the fact that with the cruise you have to get there at 10h and go back at 17h. So to summarize: don’t worry if you have a small car it will be okay as far as you drive slow.

Getting to the parking spot is rough to say the least. You get to it through dirt road located at a cliff with no safety features in place. Afterwards, you have to walk about 2.5km through many steps, hills and sand heaps (more of a hike than a walk) in non shaded conditions. I've seen many people faint. Save yourself the journey and take ferry to the beach from Kissamos. The only fun thing about the parking are the goats.
