From the beach, the trail starts nicely inside the palm trees, then gets a bit rough. And then the path is blocked by large boulders. You have take off your shoes and push forward, jumping from rock to rocks until you make it. It takes ~30 mins to go over the rocks. Beware of syphons, though.
Try to follow the black pipe on the left of the gorge to exit back on the trail, and then back to the parking lot following the edge (not recommended if you fear the height. Take the path on the field behind the fence in this case).
Bonus: we saw a large gyps vulture (~rare!) close-up.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We hiked to the beach one way, and hiked back the other side of the river. It was exhausting, but also very pretty and nice. We went there early in the morning and I would recommend everyone hiking in the summer to do so as well.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Very nice beaches and the combination of salt water and fresh water swimming is very interesting. If you swim or walk upstream the river you will be into a beautiful gorge after approximately 500 m. From there on you have to climb and or swim to go on. A wonderful adventure.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This was our first day in Creta and this is absolutely beautiful gorge. The palm forest is magical. This is where we spend all our day swimming in the river not in the sea because we didn't like the beach and the sea. But go to the end of the palm forest and try to find secret small beaches where you can swim like we did.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Just a short walk from the beach towards the river offers a beautiful experience where you can enjoy swimming in the fresh water in the many pools and small riverbeds. Worth a visit.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Slightly too touristic but the remote reward awaits if you hike to the end of the gorge and you get the views and gorge all by yourself

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Really nice and easy walking and swimming in the river. Beautiful palm trees surrounding the river. Possibility to meet some local goats. In the beginning of this trail there is a restaurant and toilets.
