Βρίσκεται Β.Α του όρους Ελικώνα και στα διοικητικά όρια της Κοινότητας Μαυροματίου (Δήμου Αλιάρτου), στα σύνορα των επαρχιών Θήβας και Λιβαδειάς. Βορειότερα της Ιεράς Μονής, στη θέση με την ονομασία, “Χάρμαινα”, εγκαταστάθηκαν οι πρώτοι κάτοικοι κατά τον 14ο μ.Χ. αιώνα και χρησιμοποιούσαν ως ενοριακό ναό για τις θρησκευτικές και εκκλησιαστικές τους ανάγκες ένα μικρό εκκλησάκι επ’ ονόματι του Αγίου Γεωργίου, στη θέση που βρίσκεται σήμερα το καθολικό της Μονής. Ο Άγιος Γεώργιος αποτελούσε την ακρόπολη των διασπαρθέντων υποτυπωδών κατοικιών των κατοίκων της περιοχής. Μετά την μετακίνηση των λιγοστών αυτών κατοίκων από τη Χάρμαινα στο σημερινό Μαυρομάτι το έτος 1374, το εκκλησάκι του Αγίου Γεωργίου εγκαταλείφθηκε έρμαιο στη φθορά του χρόνου, αλλά και στις λεηλασίες των βάρβαρων κατακτητών. Γύρω στο 1895 μια οικογένεια από το Μαυρομάτι με πρωτοβουλία της, αλλά και με τη συνδρομή και άλλων πιστών, ανέλαβε την ανοικοδόμηση του εγκαταλελειμμένου και ερειπωμένου ιερού ναού. Ακριβώς λοιπόν πάνω στα ερείπια του παλαιού οικοδόμησαν το νέο ναό με υλικά και μέσα της εποχής. Δυστυχώς όμως δεν άντεξε τον καταστροφικό σεισμό του Φεβρουαρίου του 1981, με αποτέλεσμα να υποστεί μεγάλες ζημιές που δύσκολα ίσως μπορούσαν να αποκατασταθούν. Αυτό είχε ως συνέπεια να κατεδαφιστεί, ενώ εικόνες και σκεύη πού χρησιμοποιούνταν για την λατρεία να απολεσθούν ή να καταστραφούν. Η αγάπη των πιστών και των κατοίκων του Μαυροματίου γενικότερα για τον μεγαλομάρτυρα Άγιο Γεώργιο, έκτισαν το σημερινό εκκλησάκι, για άλλη μια φορά πάνω στα θεμέλια του πρώτου ναού. Αλλά και το υπόλοιπο κτιριακό συγκρότημα. Σ’ αυτόν τον ευλογημένο χώρο λοιπόν, σ’ αυτό το ταπεινό ξωκκλήσι, που δέχτηκε τις προσευχές τόσων ανθρώπων, που τόσες φορές ο αθλητής του Χριστού έκανε αισθητή την παρουσία του με θαύματα και σημεία, ευδόκησε ο Θεός να συσταθεί στην εκπνοή του εικοστού αιώνα (1997), μοναστήρι. Αρχικά η μονή συστάθηκε ως γυναικεία, στη συνέχεια όμως μετά την αποχώρηση των μοναζουσών, και αφού η μονή έμεινε ουσιαστικά κλειστή για ένα διάστημα, εγκαταστάθηκε η νέα ανδρώα αδελφότητα. Just on the ruins of the old one they built the new temple with materials and means of the time. Unfortunately, it did not withstand the devastating earthquake of February 1981, resulting in heavy damage that could hardly be restored. This resulted in the demolition of images and utensils used for worship to be lost or destroyed. The love of the faithful and the inhabitants of Mavromatios in general for the great martyr Aghios Georgios, built today's chapel, once again on the foundations of the first temple. And the rest of the building complex. In this blessed place, in this modest chapel, which received the prayers of so many people, so many times the athlete of Christ felt his presence in wonders and signs, God was able to set up in the exaltation of the twentieth century 1997), monastery.
